How to Figure Out How Much You Can Tow

A truck's advertised towing capacity assumes a nearly empty truck. Everything you add to the truck, including the trailer's tongue weight, eats into both the payload and the combined rating. The real limit is the lowest of several numbers:

Combined limit: trailer ≤ GCWR − loaded truck weight
Payload limit: tongue weight ≤ GVWR − (curb weight + people and cargo)
Also: trailer ≤ rated towing capacity, and ≤ hitch rating

Tongue weight = trailer weight × tongue %. It counts against the truck's payload and GVWR.

Tips

Weigh your rig at a truck scale: the truck alone, then hitched to the loaded trailer. Rear axle rating (GAWR) is another limit this page doesn't check; the scale ticket shows axle weights. Many experienced towers stay at or under 80% of the limits for safety margin, especially in the mountains and wind.
