How Business Days Are Counted

The count starts the day after the start date and includes the end date, the way most contracts and shipping estimates count ("10 business days from today"). Saturdays and Sundays are always skipped.

Business days = calendar days − weekend days − holidays on weekdays

US federal holidays follow 5 U.S.C. 6103: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth (from 2021), Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A holiday on Saturday is observed Friday, and on Sunday is observed Monday.

Tips

Banks, states and private employers may observe different holidays (many companies close the day after Thanksgiving but not on Columbus Day). If your contract counts differently, adjust the dates to match.
