How RMDs Are Calculated

RMD = prior December 31 balance ÷ distribution period for your age

Most people use the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (26 CFR 1.401(a)(9)-9(c), also Table III in IRS Publication 590-B). If your spouse is the sole beneficiary and more than 10 years younger, the Joint Life table gives a smaller RMD.

Tips

RMD age is 73 for people born 1951–1959 and 75 for those born in 1960 or later (SECURE 2.0). Roth IRAs have no RMDs for the owner. Missing an RMD can mean a 25% excise tax (10% if corrected quickly). Calculate each IRA separately; you may take the total from any of them. Inherited accounts follow different rules. Not tax advice.
