How Social Security Benefits Are Figured

2026 PIA = 90% of AIME up to $1,286 + 32% from $1,286 to $7,749 + 15% above $7,749
Claim early: −5/9% per month for the first 36 months early, −5/12% per month beyond   Delay: +2/3% per month (8% a year) up to 70

Full retirement age is 67 for people born in 1960 or later (66 plus 2 months per year for 1955–1959). Bend points are from the SSA Office of the Chief Actuary.
